Twelve innovative startups have been selected to join Startupscale, our pioneering business experiment designed to help accelerate the development of new technology companies in the North of England.
Several of the startups involved are led by entrepreneurs taking their first steps in the technology business. They include Adiam Amanuel, founder of social discovery app 721, and Susan Ismail, who has developed a social media recruitment platform called Workzone, and Fabio Caparrelli, who has created a portable video analysis tool with instant playback for sports coaches called SportReTiNA, after lecturing at Sheffield Hallam University for the last 15 years.
Others on the Startupscale programme are on their second or even third ventures. Scott Davies, former CEO of primary care recruiters Hallam Medical, is launching tecy.digital, a recruitment platform for technology contractors and freelancers. Wayne Smallman has developed the information capture system, Under Cloud, an information capture and management system, off the back of another project. Scott Knowles’ Werkflows is the latest offering of business software solutions from parent company Playwerks.
Some of the entrepreneurs involved in Startupscale are providing solutions to problems they faced during employment. Michael Brett of Me & My Builder has developed a project management app to improve communication between builders and their clients. Tim Jones founded Positive Transition, a service designed to help armed service members in their transition out of the military. And Katie Steele, currently pre-launch and working in the heritage sector, aims to make Church buildings more accessible through 3D modelling technologies.
While most of the businesses involved are based in Sheffield, the programme has attracted interest from startups based across the North. Participants in the series include Chris Monkman, co-founder of Neighbourhood, a Manchester-based city living startup, Steven Haynes of Coact, a project management system company from Leeds, and Simon Wright from Chesterfield workplace consultancy HappyWired.
Listen to the Startupscale Podcast
Startupscale is created by Roaring Mouse Public Relations, and based in Sheffield at Kollider, a digital and technology business incubator powered by Barclays Eagle Labs. The startups taking part will gain guidance from experienced technology entrepreneurs and industry experts – including Annemie Ress of PurpleBeach, Samantha Deakin Hill at Campus Capital, and Phil Hornby of SOT Consulting – and feature in a podcast and documentary video series charting their journeys.
If the entrepreneurs and startups that have come forward to be part of Startupscale are anything to go by, we can be sure that the North of England is a hotbed for game changing ideas and technology talent.
We are delighted that the programme is now live, and look forward to supporting and telling the stories of these incredible people and businesses over the next two years.
